I think that many good people have turned away from
ALL religion because they are 'morally' offended by
the various types of evil that have been committed
in the name of various religions. They fail to recognize
the source of their own high moral standards because too
many of the organizations, and their leaders, have become...
shall we say... poor shepherds to their flocks ....
There is a tendency among organizations in general to make
self-preservation of the organization the #1 priority; which
means that they can no longer be totally dedicated to the
high moral principles for which they were originally
established and it soon becomes apparent that the organization
has been corrupted by (the desire for) money and power.
Just for the sake of argument, let us assume that there really
was a 'JC' -- can we be absolutely sure what He taught? I think
not; we have nothing written in His own hand, and videotape is
right out....but there is a broad, generally accepted idea of
Who He was and What He taught, and there is a broad gulf between
those high principles and the reality of how His followers are
led, and frequently misled....
there are many good people who actually follow His teachings, or
at least a good number of them, but fail to acknowledge the
source. There are many others who piously preach His Word, or at least their own personal vision of it... and some make a very good living at it, too...
do you reject the source of pure, clean water because stupid,
greedy, or careless people have polluted that water downstream?
When the Crusaders took Jerusalem in His name, and to further
glorify His name slaughtered every Moslem, Jew, and non-Catholic
Christian they could lay their hands on... do you think He
rejoiced over the glorious and Holy river of blood that was shed
in His name? (Do you think Muhammad is metaphorically patting
Osama on the back and congratulating him?)
Do you blame God for the crimes of His followers?
Do you simply deny His existence, and pretend that morality
arose out of thin air?
I choose to believe in God; I also believe in the God-given right
of others to believe otherwise.
I believe that God has sent messengers, and they have taught us the right way to live and treat each other. If we look carefully
at their teachings, we might also see how similar they are, and
how incredibly stupid are the rantings of those who instigate
religious wars (yeah, well MY prophet's better than YOUR prophet!!) |
