You can install a linux on an older computer.(as old as a 386) Its configurable, customizable, and stable. If the GUI has an issue you don't have to reboot... Just ctlF(2 etc) a new terminal or kill X and restart it. The GUI's make it easy enough to use.(show him KDE if you can but for his benifit choose the windows 95 theme or something... complete with screensavers). Oh and mention its got themes too... Tell him he'll still get the tool tips saying what things are and he'll also get more information than he might of gotten on windows. Tell him that if something gets messed up as security percaution only root can fix it... That users just can't do certain things and you can limit access to files if needed or grant access. Also say it runs faster. And if it helps point out you know someone with a mentally challanged 9 yr old and a visually/hearing impared 11 yr old that use linux with no problem using KDE.(yes thats my kids... and they actually like linux... they say "linux rules windows drools" and nope I didn't teach them that... plus helps tux is cute). Also tell him you can run various emulators on linux.. and that linux will handle routing in the house, etc whereas with windows 9x it is more hassle. Also point out there is a fair bit of software and more showing up over time... that if he wants to play UT against you from a windows you can play against him from linux. Linux also see's windows where windows doesn't see linux but SAMBA will allow file sharing, etc.
