Win2k is quite stable enough for the average user.

If the machine isn't being used for anything else, there are very good reasons to try out Linux or BSD or the like on it. On the other hand, if it is being used for Windows apps (esp. by non-geeks), there are very good reasons not to mess with it. We don't have enough info to give very good advice, really.
