either a CPU old enough not to have heat protection, or an AMD CPU? One reason I will be very wary of AMD CPUs in the future is that they have zero overheat protection. If their heatsink/cooler gets knocked off, they fry in less than a second.

Anyway, sorry that happened. If the chip is fairly current and it was a stock heatsink/fan combo, you might be able to get it replaced under warranty. If not, at least CPUs are pretty cheap these days.
