Well, I based my guess on the fact that 'tube' is kind of slang for TV ('is there anything on the tube?')... BTW, there are beamers and beamers: apparently there are also beamers that have a worse resolution than VHS; trying to watch something where the pixels on the screen it's projected on are such big hexagonal blobs that the subtitles get difficult to read isn't much fun... :(
