| The hardware problems are finally reasonably resolved, and the backups are being restored. If all goes well the rest of the night, things will be back up and running before the teachers and students arrive in the morning and get going on their classes.
It's almost funny that the backup plan (such as it was) didn't adequately explore what happens when the tape server itself goes down. Add that the RAID hardware, which works perfectly under the version of Linux originally installed on the box, was completely invisible to every distro we tried to get to boot.
Oh well, who needed sleep anyway. At least I finally get around to posting on UF, though I would certainly never be reading it at this ungodly hour.
Sigh.... 'dd if=/dev/nst0 bs=32k | gzip -dc - | tar -xpf -' is truly my friend.... |
