I'm thinking of the folks that try their damnedest to assume the role of parents (and it isn't an easy job), only to have this qualifier draped on them, with the implication that their claim to parentage is somehow inferior. Yes, some folks do take it this way, and I can see their point. Again, looking at the adoption angle, I have a hard time viewing adoptive parents as *not* real (as the common terminology implies). If it doesn't bother you, then fine. It's up to you. Personally, I see them all as parents until proven otherwise. I don't like to distinguish if the context doesn't require it--it creates unnecessary clutter and unrequested clarifications. What do you call bad parents? That depends.
