considering you messed with the cable already, I'd look into the jacks you are plugging the cable into and see if the little wires inside are straight and lined up. I've seen quite a few modems and NICs screw up badly because of just that. Word of caution: if they need to be straightened, don't use pliers and make sure the unit is off.
