Especially since fiddling with it got the link light to come on. Just because you have link light and partially activity, it doesn't mean you have all the wires. I drove myself nuts on an IP/ARP problem a couple of weeks ago, and finally connected a cable tester and discovered a short in one of the twist pairs. So, more than likely, either the cable or one of the cable ends is loose/has a short.

*note to self - one of these days, come up higher than layer 3 and see what the rest of the computing world is doing... but then again, XP is on the loose, so best stay down on the lower levels and be spared the horror*
