you might want to try using a different nic, swap the one from your parent's computer out and place in yours in order to see whether the nic has gone bad. And try placing the cable in a different port of the hub and if none of those work, try switching hubs or checking the wiring between that hub and your gateway (if you have more than 1). If none of those work, check the driver settings if in windows or unload/reload the module if in *nix.
