Hmm, kinda hard to see that he caused it to happen by pecosdave 2001-11-12 05:00:46
Most of the oldest software was open source. It seems to me that the earliest versions of Unix where open source, if not at least free, this predates Microsoft. When programs where written on punched cards it was kinda hard to hide your source code. That at least made the source open, though not necessarily free. Truth be told MS and IBM helped to close off the earliest forms of open source with their propritary DOS systems. We are just now beging to recover from this with Linux, BSD and the like. What MS did do indirectly to help the open source community. Thanks to Winblows the computer became easier for the average user, both my Grandmas can use Winblows well enough to view pictures, do basic word processing, and play Mahjong. Because the computer was so widely distributed it made the hardware more accessible and the way the equation works, cheaper. The shear availability of the hardware is what MS did to help open source, indirectly.
