about assuming that big business will exploit any possible method to make money? I mean, that is what they exist to do.

The switch over to HDTV is actually the perfect time to incorporate something like this. Just quietly slip the technology into all new HDTV boxes and either 1) design them so they won't work without the encrypted stream, or 2) convince the makers of HDTV broadcasting equipment to include the technology, or 3) both. It will take time to penetrate the market, but once the standard is settled on, the rest is easy.

But wait, the FTC and FCC are there to protect us. We all know they never, ever make decisions that are bad for John Q. Public. </sarcasm>
