Should this C5 encryption be adopted, it will be adopted as an industry standard, and everyone who broadcasts and manufactures digital recording devices will use this standard. This idea already works pretty well in screen resolutions: all TV manufacturers produce TVs with the same number of h-lines, and everyone who sends out a signal sends it out the same way. Contrary to your apparent belief, there's not going to be a conglomeration of Hollywood execs sitting in a room and voting on whether or not you get to record ER, all that's being done here is standardization and covering the bottom line of movie studios. As it is now, you don't really have much choice on what resolution TV you're going to buy, and you're limited to what the FCC has decided will be the standard. I don't see the reason in raising a stink about that any more than I see the reason in raising one about C5. It's also important to remember that nothing is set in stone regarding this. |
