            DeCSS by Arcanum 2001-11-09 11:56:33
was written to allow DVDs to be played on Linux. If licensed DVD software had been made for Linux, the creation of DeCSS would not've been needed.

As as far as copying VHS tapes goes, it can very easily fall under the category of "fair use". VHS tapes wear out, and as you pointed out, we pay for the ability to watch the movie. The movie companies aren't about to give us new copies of tapes that wear out or get damaged, so copies have to be made.

If media companies stopped producing things that curtail fair-use, maybe people would spend less time trying to get around the restrictions that are there.
