I don't mind if they want to copy protect their own materials, but when their protection prevents people from making legal copies of their own data, and uncopyrighted or public domain materials, then they have clearly crossed the line into unacceptable infringement on our rights.

If, as they claim, I am paying for the rights to watch their movie, then I should be able to take a damaged tape into any video store and get a replacement for just the cost of the media. After all, I have already paid for the right to have and watch the contents. (I think we should also be able to upgrade a tape to DVD for just the cost of the media.) But they don't allow this, do they? If they want to take away our ability to make a legal backup copy, and copyright law does allow you to make one backup copy of anything you purchase the rights to, they should Have to provide replacements for no more than it would have cost us to make the backup.
