There is a such a thing as fair use. You can make backup copies (the real kind, not the euphemism for piracy) legally. You can use excerpts for informational and educational use. You can even make copies for your personal use (as you pointed out, you're paying for the right to watch the movie). This type of copy protection effectively destroys fair-use rights (and this is true for more than just movies).
