Never thought of myself as a newbie, but I've only been following UF since 2/01 (where was I!) -- love it!
Illiad's a genius, but then I'm preaching to the choir.
luckypup, you could be Sid's uncle! I usually feel pretty old reading most on-line groups.. but '57?
Here's my timeline
Late '70s: PDP/LSI11s, RT-11, (ever heard of an RL01 - 5Mb 12" disk pack, real beast), teletype I/O, grad school scene.
'80s: Ten years lost doing basic science (did become quite friendly w/ IBM-PC)
'90s: Got back into the scene .. Unix(94), Linux(95), lots of code work. Great fun, never looked back.
BTW, I agree, sometimes it takes the old timers to help the younger set to understand when a fundamental shift is at hand, and get them to really move. |
