5C Copy Protection by bldyrlms2001-11-09 01:28:05
  You mean... by nin_man 2001-11-09 08:19:26
...we won't be able to make copies of movies? Wow. That's really a shame. This means we'll actually have to PAY for a movie! Oh no! That sounds all legal and stuff, and I know how much geeks hate doing something that's legal.

When you purchase (you know, give money for something) a movie, be it on VHS, DVD, the back of a zebra, or even Betamax if you can find it, you're not buying intellectual property rights to that movie. All you're buying is the right to watch that movie. This does not include the right to make copies of the movie for probable distribution to people who haven't paid for the right to watch the movie.

All you're doing is complaining about being denied the ability to do something you're not supposed to be doing in the first place. I've got movies I copied from cable, and I've got a few .mp3s on my computer. I won't claim innocent here. However, if legislation were passed which effectively killed the ability to tape movies or rip CDs, I wouldn't raise a stink about it, because no freedoms are being taken away. All that's being removed is a workaround for something that's already illegal.
