The actual Texas law for knife length is "Five and one half inches", all three of the kives on me are legal. The carrying of riffles is definately legal, this was recently proven during a recent Black Panthers demonstration. They where carying semi-automatic assault riffles that could easily be modified to be fully automatic. I actually did some research on this about ten years back, the laws vary by county with at least one county that enforces non-exsistant laws on guns. As far as most other counties and knives are concerned it's mostly "no harm no foul" through out most of the state. The double edged knife law almost never affects folding pocket knives, quite popular with a large portion of the male population. I've known people to cary sheathed knives of different lengths and varriaties for years, including over six inches or double edged all day every day. I am unclear on sheathed knives, but as long as they are visible there is more lead way in some cirumnstances, sheaths are absolutely required in some circumnstances, and out right banned in others. These laws are known to conflict and are usually of the county/city variaty.
I know that the laws on pistols are different throughout the state. Some counties as long as it is holstered and visible it's leagal, but you're going to be hasseled so much about it it's not worth carrying. The whole state now has a concealed carry law that is quite good in my opinion. My biggest problem with it is under this law the pistol has to be concealed. You have to pass test on paper and on the shooting range to be certified, as well as clear background checks. The only problem with this isn't people carrying guns every where, the people who actually get this license aren't the people to worry about. The problem is all the places that forbid you to carry your leagally concealed gun. Luby's cafateria used to be one of these places. After the famous mad gunman incedent a few years back they now allow legal people to carry. You cannot carry your pistol on a bus, into any hospital, or into any place the prohibits it, which is a hassel to those who can. My old boss would not do buisness with any place that forbid him to carry his pistol and would write them letters stateing so. He also could tell you what buisnessess would give discounts to those who would show their concealed carry licenese. I'm still considering getting my license, but I currently only have a riffle and can't see the point until I get a pistol.
BTW, I've left my house with a sword more than once during the last month, and I passed sherrifs and local cops with it displayed. Appearently if you tie a string to it that keeps it teathered to the sheath it's good enough for Ren Fest. |
