This isn't about us (the people) trying to deny monies earned on intellectual & creative copyright.
It's a stance against corporate greed & the fact that no entity should have the right to dictate to other creative individuals (i.e. engineers, electronics designers) what their level of creativity and what they can create, and what we can consume.
The corporations are predicting that their own people (Americans) are going to abuse something that doesn't even exist. And that is our ability to mass produce illegal content. Recording a broadcast from ABC or CBS is not the equivalent of mass producing anything.
A happy medium can be struck here. If Hollywood has to make money off the consumer, why not have a percentage on the recordable media. But do not deny us the right to record as we see fit. Do not dictate what we can and cannot record.
They are taking it upon themselves to NOT EVEN ALLOW Consumer Electronics to be built that have the capacity to record pure digital to digital content.
A thought to ponder... How much did Hollywood ever lose on recordable VHS after they made such stink over it? (A stink that to those that have been around long enough to remember... will bring a sense of Deja Vu)
