I know this is unrelated to UF, but I needed an applicable forum to address my fellow geeks.
I just found out about 5C from Sony (Hitachi, Intel, Matsushita (MEI), Sony and Toshiba to be precise) to prevent us from making pure digital copies of television, movies, etc.
This would be the reason you do not see any recorders with Optical IN, Component IN, or receivers with FireWire. (one exception, Panasonic did release a satellite receiver with a firewire port, but took it off the market)
This 5C is an Integrated Circuit that as far as I can tell will be inside our electronic devices, and is a cryptographic technology that has "evolved over the past 20 years to serve critical military, governmental and commercial applications."
Furthermore, it's not just some snappy new algorithm: "The cryptographic stability of the system is derived from the proven strength of the underlying technologies, rather than merely how well a certain algorithm can be kept secret."
They're hailing this as an unbreakable copy protection, and I think this deserves a little attention from us geeks. We let the RIAA win 1 battle over copy protection, and here is another one that is sneaking up under our noses into the very televisions and other devices we're using at this moment.
Here are 3 websites I found particularly useful for my own info-gathering:
http://www.sony.co.jp/en/SonyInfo/News/Press/199811/98-1130/
http://www.dtcp.com/spec.html
http://www.eff.org/IP/Video/20000918_fcc_hdtv_rule.html#L67
Wouldn't it be nice if we could, yet again, send the message that this will not be tolerated?
I salute Andrew Bunner and all those associated with 2600.com for this is the next step from DeCSS. |
