it would be all that difficult...relatively speaking. A nuclear warhead is simply three pieces suspended apart that get blown together by small shaped explosive charges around the outside. All three pieces apart are below the "critical mass" point but when they are stuck together, to quote the 5th Element, Ba-Da-Boom!

The tricky part is to get the shaped charges around the outside to all go off at exactly the same moment and to balance them off so that the plutonium (or whatever) stays together after the initial, tiny, bang.
