toward myself...
i don't program. i've done it before, for two different reasons. i did get paid for it at one time. i've also thrown together small bats to make my life simpler.
i do enjoy the outdoors. i'm a waterfall kind of guy, so i generally prefer the mountains. i also enjoy climbing, whether it be rocks or trees. however, i also have poor circulation, so i get cold easily. one thing that i -lack- is initiative, so i don't often go out to enjoy the outdoors unless someone else presents the idea.
i'm also a social creature. there are very few times when i would turn down a social opportunity in order to be at my computer. i'm willing to do nearly anything if it means i get to spend time with my friends.
i have some measure of faith in the government. i don't believe that they'll completely &*(^ everything up. i -do- believe that there's substantial room for improvement, given the directions in which our government has evolved.
i don't mind large corporations. the problem that i have is that the large corporation has become much less concerned about its employees than it used to be. on the flip side, though, employees are coming to expect less from the corps, so we'll survive. but i consider this a kludge.
pop culture? such as? movies? music? tv? i enjoy these. i actually don't spend nearly as much time in front of a tv as 'most people' do. but i spend more time with music than many, too. i sing with an a capella group (based at NC State Univ...though it's been years since i've taken any classes there. see thread on 'wasting money' :)
i don't like coffee. i don't care about caffeine one way or the other. i drink tea. i like sweet drinks, though, so sodas often fulfill that desire. but i drink a lot more milk than 'most people', too.
games. okay, there's one huge difference between you and me. i love games. if i don't have things to be doing with other people, then you're likely to find me gaming. and beyond that, i prefer gaming with people over gaming by myself. and i mean real people, not electronic i-don't-really-have-a-clue-who-in-the-world-you-are people. i greatly appreciate my computer for the purposes of keeping in touch with family and friends, but i am a gamer.
i've never had linux installed on anything. in fact, i didn't even own a computer 'til i was almost 21. now, i had more experience than many people my age with VAX/VMS, *IX, etc., but nowhere near as much as the experts. i mostly just learned what i needed to know in order to talk to people and to play games.
i find it peculiar that you find BOfH to be dull, yet you frequent UF. i rather thought that the sense of humor involved was very similar. maybe i was wrong.
haven't seen hackers. i'd probably like it, though. but then, i like just about anything. i'm not too critical.
here's another big difference. i'm a big fantasy buff. if i don't have people, and i somehow don't have a game around, then i'm probably reading fantasy. (or maybe i'm dead. but as far as i know, that hasn't happened yet.) i'm a big RPG fan, and it may have something to do with the fact that D&D had a major impact on my social life growing up. as in, it afforded me one.
so, assuming that i'm a geek, i would have to boil this down to: you're not a geek because you don't game or like sci-fi/fantasy.
does that fly? |
