Jeez mentioning the jihad in relation to this you are the one who is being pointless.
Yes registration is a way to combat illegal copying. But it IS a hassle -- that doesn't change. I don't have that problem with my copy of Linux, and that to me is an advantage. Regardless of whether one product is closed source and another is open, I still have to spend an extra twenty minutes dealing with license management with Windows for a single computer that I don't have to waste when I install Linux.
It is a clear indication that you have not used a Windows product before. First of REGISTRATION is optional you really do not have to register. Second it has never taken me more than 5 minutes, 10 in the olden days when you had to send in the registration by post (I'm not good with the pen anymore). Third, while installing you usually have to enter a number, that has never taken me more than a minute. Forth, ACTIVATION is a must on XP product and also has taken me less than a minute (internet activation) and if you are a corporate user (select license...) there is no activation. So if you take the full options it will take you an extra 5 minutes or 7 minutes if you fumble a lot. If you only do the necesary it will not take you a minute extra. And there is also the timegain for not having to look for the latest drivers by yourself, not having to surf around linux messageboards looking how to setup up your graphics card or other device. So for businesses and people in general it is a real timesaver.
Does a jewelry thief complain that his diamonds were too expensive?
What is your point here? A thief does not steal to own the goods a thief steals to get the money after selling the goods, if diamonds were dead cheap and coal was expensive he'd steal coal. MS software has a price, and people are going to try to get it for free and since software is easily stolen it is happening a lot, I am not a favor of the activation (it will hurt the people not the pirates) but it is only (economically) logical that software companies try to do something about it.
Surprise, surprise if you don't have to hack the registry to get it to work correctly
But you can and that is what is called customizability. If the changes that you make are significant to the market you can be sure in a next version there will be an aplet in the control pannel or somebody will write an interface for you to use so you don't have to thread into the dreaded registry.
I gotta get to work.
