thats the explanation i was looking for - i don't exactly want to accept something without explanation - which was part of my problem with math for so many years :)

i just figured that i was trying to evaluate/compare a string - guess not *shrugs shoulders* ya learn something new every day - heh - and i guess i've learned how to convert from Korn Shell to Perl - the Perl is a bit longer than the Korn Shell version - but does a lot more.
