that did the trick - option 2 is what i needed - what i'd *really* love to know tho is why does =~ work in this instance? i should have tried that option as well - i did it on another if-then statement when nothing else worked and that did the trick - what is the difference between = eq and =~ ?

(and yes i know RTFM - i *am* rtfm'ing - but haven't quite had that bit explained yet - just sort of seen it work and thats that. perhaps i'm just jumping the gun trying to write Perl programs ahead of what i know so far. *shrugs shoulders*
