It certainly contributes when a large chunk of the humor only makes sense to geeks.
One of the main reasons I still read UF is this board. The comic's funny and well-done, but so often the geeky humor escapes me, and not really enough to keep me coming back every day on its own. Sluggy I read just as much for the frequently amazing artwork as for the funny (I likes me some puns, yes I do). Actually, there's more than just those four I read (hell, I even read The Buckets), but it's just a small sampling, and it hopefully showed that just reading one comic doesn't make someone a geek. Even being here doesn't necessarily make me one. Most of my friends are female, does that make me a woman?
