My view on yesterday's posting by leowic2001-11-07 07:31:54
Oh yes, new computers ARE expensive. by bugarup2001-11-07 11:44:53
    I agree... by Arienadean 2001-11-07 13:45:13
Also I have registered copies of 3.11, 95B, and 98... and have registered software I have, etc.(both online and in mail in cards)... Registered or not windows is very pricy and so are some of the programs for it.

As for 486's I've used 95 on one with 8megs ram... slow but it works. Thats what one of my 486's does... the other will be pure linux. I've not fully decided what my current machine will be after I build a new one. I've also ran customized 9x on both my pentium class machine and 486's in past. I've also removed stuff from them and tweaked them. My roommate also actually likes windows but despite being a fan he avidly hates having to resinstall every few months, the twain drivers puking and other things.(he's using a p150 but has a p100 as well... both have least 40megs ram in them)

Computers are expensive but have come down in price. I know from what I've looked at to buid a new one.(thanks to Kickstart, MikeCDN and others that answered my post the other day). From that site I could aprox build one using some parts of my existing for about $580 not including tax. However keep in mind while that is good price wise. I'm not the only geek out there that is either a single parent or on a fixed income.(others are temp unempolyed, others retired, etc). I don't get a what some do to survive on a month and I must make due and whatevers left I can set aside I try to...

I've been saving to make a new computer for a bit now. This one I'm currently using cost me $350 and I got it aprox 1 1/2 yrs ago used.(its a cyrix 6x86 p133+, 64M ram, 33.6 USR pnp, 4x acer, 1.6g seagate, floppy, 250MB tape drive(which now has died), Mach64, keyboard, mouse, and assorted spare bits... no monitor). I bought after it for it a acer g772 .25 monitor for about $350, aopen mini hub 10baset, $40, aopen 10/100 nic, 40x cd(it was an acer but didn't like the other 4x so switched it for my roommates generic one) $60 I think, a linksys usb 4port hub for about $115 I think, and a video blaster plus for aprox $90, ohci usb card for about $45, and some cat5 (a 50ft and 10 ft peice). Which I did on a budget... while also having to deal with hospital expenses when with my daughter, and normal "things"...

I don't really drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't even get out much... so my computer is my hobby and entertainment. I don't think it should just be for an elite few that can afford it. I've found it a very useful tool to help my children learn and deal with things.(my daughter can't play like most kids anymore due to cancer... and both kids have learning issues... add in I have communication and socialization issues... so the computer is something important here in a sense). Anyways point is not everyone can afford the latest and greatest. Some have older systems and can't do much about it. But they are thankful they have a system at all. My kids have had exposure to multiple OS... They don't grasp registration or costs of it or system errors(tho they know the BSOD...). Tho they are young they both like linux followed by MacOS... windows falls behind that. They say they only like to use it for some games but they also rather like whats in linux games wise, etc and my daughters iMac.(she got it from her school due to her vision, hearing and learning issues...)

I still stand by what I said the other day on why I don't like windows. I don't hate it but I think it could be much better. Especially with the claims they make and issues people seem to have.(people that are computer illerate look at the marketing go thing hey thats easy and buy a computer... then they are totally lost, problems occur, etc. People need to be more literate or they have to make it more to their claims/things implied in advertising.)
