top on unix/Linux displays a semi-realistic CPU usage [1],
while system monitor's CPU display just jumps to 100% whenever
you start a program and stays there for a while...
It seems it only has a baseline (programs open, not typing
or using mouse) and 100%. :(


[1] though on Linux the 'load' in top's display is a bit 'funny'
because I/O is also counted there; mp3 players work without
stutters on a single-cpu system with load above 1 (more than
1 cpu needed to run the current programs without delay) and, say,
cpu 20% idle...
