| Why Windows Sucks |

I wasn't on yesterday (and am pretty much a lurker anyway), so I didn't put in my 2 cents. However, I can't resist:
Small recent personal issue:
Windows 2000 Server - booting gave error C0000218. Basically, the registry was gone, along with any backups. The computer was shut down properly. After some research, I found that the cause is a timing error where Windows occasionally sends the signal to shut down the computer before it's done writing the registry, and therefore it's no longer there.
General problems:
Ever had a *nix virus? Nimda brought down and infected our entire lab network before we could update our virus scanner. Of course, Zone Alarm would have prevented it from spreading, but the government beaurocracy (sp?) that we have to go through to get software is ridiculous. But that is beside the point. Having to have antivirus software and firewall software to prevent problems that are inherent OS design flaws is absurd.
I also have to reiterate the software crashes. Bad software crashes no matter what OS you're using. I have to kill frozen programs in Linux (like Netscape), but it doesn't destabilize the OS. Though NT/2000 is better than the 9x kernel, it still dies occasionally when a program crashes. Several Linux users with years of experience with the OS that I know have never seen a Linux kernel panic.
I like windows in theory, but in practice, it pisses me off. It has lots of apps, though most of them cost too much for me to buy. The up-to-date hardware support is nice. However, I am sick of reinstalling it, which is much easier than fixing it. I am sick of having to fix it. I don't care about what it looks like. I still have the turquoise background on my win98 at home.
I just don't like fixing and worrying about my computer. I just want to use it. With Linux I can do just that.
Retail price of Mandrake 8.1 Standard: $25 (yes, I paid it)
Windows XP home edition: $100 |
