Yup.
Once, while I was in College, back when Nethack was a much 'newer' game. It blew the minds of a lot of my friends, as they've never done it. It wasn't even my computer, belonged to someone else, who let me play on it from time to time. But here's a few ideas to help.
1. Save regularly, and make a backup of the save file.
2. Take your time exploring, when you have food to do it.
3. LEVEL YOUR CHARACTER!!!
But pay close attention to #1, it's saved me from some serious mistakes, and it's almost like a free identify for your gear if you die.
Save character and make backup. Restart game with character (-u <playername> option). Die, and have your stuff identified. Copy back save file. Restart game again, use the good stuff, and 'call' the junk stuff something you'll notice.
