So, there I was, minding my own business,... by special_ed2001-11-05 08:51:54
So, a quick poll: Why are you vegetarians? by JPaganel2001-11-05 09:36:12

the other... My daughter just doesn't like meat... She's not a total vegan but if she makes it to adulthood she may choose to do that. Right now she eats poultry and on rare occasions lamb or pork. In general she perfers veggies, grains, soy stuff, etc. Now with my roommate he is most definitly a meat eater and he has some health issues that apprently need him to eat a fair bit of redmeat or something.(or so he says). My son will pretty much eat anything. He likes tofu but he also likes hamburgers. As for me I don't really eat much redmeat(like my daughter occasionally some pork or lamb tho I might also eat beef on occasion). I have lived vegitarian but went back to meats because others I was with had issue with vegitarian stuff.(tho they did like my vegitarian chicken soup, stews, etc... its a matter of taste... if it tastes good they don't complain if its something weird they do. And as having had meat I know the diffrence so when I make meat free try to make it not a huge taste diffrence in certain "mock" items).

As for risks of colon cancer my dad and aunt died of that... Both my sister and I are very high risk of it(partly as I had something removed when my son was tiny). My dad grew his own organic veggies and for many years had bought meat from farmers who organically raised their animals. He smoked tho gave it up after retirement and my aunt didn't smoke... both drank tea(apprently a risk factor) but other than that both my aunt and my dad lived healthy. Hereditary things play a role in such things and sometimes you can eat quite healthy and still get it anyways. As for heart disease some relatives also had that and maintained like diets however in those in question their smoking got complained on by the doc.<shrug>

I think its best to maintain a balanced diet. The vegan/vegitarian diets are harder true but people can make them work. Some eat regular diets that don't properly balance their meat intake with other things they require or figure taking a ton of vitamins will make up for it.

Something tho on red meat. I think some studies have shown that it can affect mood and a few other things so some people with certain issues might get advised to watch their diet... and it does have an effect on some by personal observance of a few eating a ton of meat and also eating normal levels or cutting back. Also in some animals get anti biotics... thease antibiotics and things to some extent will go away however trace amounts might remain and for those with a sensitivity it can be an issue. For milk they monitor the quanities of things that transfer into milk from the cows. Penicillins, tetracylin, e-mycin I think are the common ones. They have them at "safe" levels per batch but that fluctates as after testing they could dump in a new vat to the bunch of milk already there.

For some there are specific reasons why they can't have dairy or red meats... certain health conditions and other ones that yet require it. Its pretty individual. Like I said I think some people are just naturally vegan/vegitarian and others are naturally meat eaters... Some might make a choice for humanitarian reasons some might for health... Also some cultures have very traditional diets that lean one way or the other... partly due to availablity of certain food items amoungst other things...

I really don't mind what anyone is as long as they respect everyones right to form their own opinon and choose their own path. I don't hassle vegans or meat eaters... Yet one day at the library this radical anti meat group had I guess stuck things in books to go for their cause... I took out a cross stich book to later while looking at it find their flyer... one of my kids saw luckily both didn't and the one that did saw it only brief. It was a gorey play on burger king with a skinned bloody cows head bits all hanging out, etc... Yes it achieved the effect of I didn't feel like eating and felt sick... however it hardly made me like their cause...

On the feeling sick without meat... Vegans/vegitarians can be ill going back on it... just as some meat eaters might not feel to great at first going vegan... eventually the body adjusts but it takes time. In the meantime no matter which diet you switch from you might feel pretty awful like you have a flu for a bit.

On ranching I've seen both wild and domestic animals ranched for food.(deer, cows, ostrich, chickens, etc). It doesn't bother me about some because some really do care on thier animals and to some extent its the cycle of their life... however the ones that treat them awful I feel bad for the animals and that aside to eat something in the condition they treat those in isn't very healthy probably. I have some issues with hunting. No problem if it really is for food and thats why they did it and its allowed hunting(not poaching). But If its just going to be some carpet or stuffed mantel peice to me thats kind of a waste of life... but to each their own... my sisters exhusband used to frequently get things for rugs... tho alot of it was stuff also for food that he just kept the skins from(fair enough there)... its just if its trophy/sport hunting and not for anything else its just I dunno seems wasteful and not exactly honouring of the life that was lost in a way...
