Would have to say, by wheresthefish 2001-11-05 11:43:05
that if we evolved as purely plant-eaters, our teeth would be dramatically different. Our canine teeth are there purely to tear flesh. They are common to nearly all meat-eating mammals, yet (afaik) unknown in herbivores. Two eyes in the front of the head, facing forward is also a common trait among hunter-gatherers. Stereoscopic vision gives a huge advantage.

Perhaps I should have said omnivore instead of carnivore. Humans are no more adapted to a purely meat diet than a purely vegetable one.

Perhaps we do not digest meat very well, but I would contend that if we didn't need the proteins/vitamins contained within, then our bodies would quickly remove it instead of hanging on to it.

Anyway, enough with the amateur biology already :)
