1) Alternatives exist.

2) Not eating meat only inconveniences me but eating meat has severe consequences for my food.

3) If you believe in evolution (which I do) then we are not really that much different from animals. Their intelligence may be lower than ours (with the possible exception of dolphins, etc) but is that any justification for eating them? On that basis, are we allowed to eat anyone who gets a low score on an IQ test? The knee-jerk response is "of course not", but if not then why?
