just in our heads. ive seen some nice linux installers, but they could be a lot better. like, a reaaaaaaaly stripped down kernel compile during the install .. one that, at the very least, compiles for your architecture.. having screenshots of various window managers (only a few of the better ones, not every one ever made .. no crap like fvwm..) where you can pick the one you want based firstly on how it looks, with a listing of good and bad points about it .. all of this, during the install. each wm should have a theme similar to eachother, so they all look alike. the cd should be bootable, and boot straight into a gui installer.
the entire distro should be geared towards desktop duties. which is to say, no servers included. a handful of games (not 50 flavors of solitaire!) .. and it should contain the best of each application. the best calculator. no xcalc. the best browser and email app (opera, perhaps, since netscape makes me ill and konq doesn't work) .. the best gui irc client (probably xchat..) the best mp3/midi/cd player (xmms?) .. etc
only one of each. one thing most linux distros have is too much choice. it's easy enough to go out and find a new app, why bother taking up hd space with 50 different apps that do the same thing, if you're only going to use 'the best' one to begin with?
this may sound like heresy to a lot of people .. taking the choice out of linux .. its still there, just not by default. in the end, you get a distro thats smaller than others and easier for people with less of a clue than some of us to work with.. but if you want a distro like all the rest just go get one .. :P
anyhow, thats the idea. :) |
