about many spellings throughout the 60 odd years he devoted to writing
his -may I say it?- masterpiece of fiction.

It's a book where are bundled nearly all the letters Tolkien has written in
answer to questions from various sources regarding his fiction. (or
microcosmos, if you like)
You can find it everywhere under: ISBN0261102656

Tolkien wasn't very keen on elaborating much about TB ... "I don't think
Tom needs philosophizing about, and is not improved by it."

You should look at it this way: TB was an alien, had nothing to do with
middle-earth, he just was there.
He wasn't influenced by nor feared anything it witheld.
He did however had a sense of knowing what was good and bad, that's
why he freed sam(? if memory serves) from old man willow. But couldn't
be bothered by the quest they were undertaking, because it didn't reach
his mind.

Try comparing it with you looking at a colony of ants, you may rescue an
ant that fell into a pit but may never understand the "common sense" of
the colony itself.

You say that you have your knowledge of the RPG cards. I suggest you
start buying "the history of middle earth" published by Christopher Tolkien
In it is contained everything (the old) Tolkien ever wrote (concerning
middle earth that is).

I think you may very soon see a lot of differences between your RPG
cards and the actual written stuff.

This doesn't imply however you should stop it! By all means, go ahead
and enjoy yourself! :)

I just hope the upcoming movie isn't as bad as the animated cartoon from the '70s.
