arguments; it has to do with a knowledge of history. The reasons for the collapse of the Roman *republic* are not at all complex; the historical record of the events of that collapse are quite complex. The Roman Republic was simply one in a long line of civilizations that followed the same cycle, to one degree or another. Egypt, Greece, the Celts, even Britain and the Soviet Union. Only a few times in history was the power base so widespread that it resulted in a dark age. But the signs are here. Unless you don't accept a cyclic view of history.

Btw, this is not an entirely new thought on my part. The collapse of Rome was emulated as a major part of Asimov's "Foundation" stories.
