is the way they wrap themselves in the flag,
resorting to pseudo-patriotism. A low-key
rational approach would not have disgusted
so many of us.
I'm also a bit turned off by the knee-jerk
displays of flags here, there, and everywhere.
If you really want to display a flag, fine, but there are
certain protocols that should be followed to protect the dignity
of the flag, and too many people are scooping up cheap pos
flags (many of them -- shudder -- made in china) and hanging
them in inappropriate ways.
At my wife's request, I will be putting up a flag today. She
ordered it, online, from Elmer's Flag and Banner in Portland, OR.
Made in USA, and it came with a small pamphlet of Flag Etiquette.
I have mixed feelings about the flag. I have great respect for
the veterans who fought for our country and saw the flag as a
symbol of everything they fought and sacrificed for. I have less
respect for those political leaders who never risked their own
lives, or their children's lives, but used pseudo-patriotic
flag-waving appeals to send off other peoples sons to fight and
die in ill-considered causes. I am not criticizing anyone who
has a genuine feeling for the flag and displays it in a dignified
and respectful manner, nor will I criticize anyone who chooses
not to jump on the bandwagon. The flag is a symbol of freedom;
let's not dishonor the flag by infringing on the freedom to NOT
fly the flag. |
