Actually Tom Bombadil is a Maiar. by brianm2001-10-21 06:26:40
              Maia... by alfapiep 2001-10-21 12:50:35
With 'r' is plural.

Tom Bombadil is not a Maia, he is a demanding fella though.
He existed long before even one letter or one thought was conceived of LOTR. "He wanted an adventure", as to his nature Tolkien states:"I do not mean him to be an an allegory [of eru] (...) but 'allegory' is the only mode of exhibiting certain functions: he is then an 'allegory', or an exemplar, a particular embodying of pure (real) natural science: the spirit that desires knowledge of other things(...)"

A bit further on he explains that TB is not of this world, because the ring does not affect him, although the ring effects everybody else within middle-earth: people, elves, maiar and valar alike.

from: "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien" letter no.153
