honestly, you sound like me. gaming on windows, serious work on linux. ever since i've setup my system this way, i never saw the need for any win2k or winxp system. why? because i don't really care if my system crashes. all i'm doing is playing games. which is really not that important to spend $250+- for a new OS. to be honest, if you want games and have serious work, the best is probably a mac. that way you can still use stuff like office, adobe, macromedia, etc, still be able to use unix stuff (probably with a recompile), and also be able to play a lot of good games (like civ3 when it comes out, etc).
in the long run, getting a mac with OSX.1 is the best choice. a unix core with a standardized (more or less) GUI and top class applications from major software developers.
