Ever have one of those horrible dreams that just sticks with you?
When I was 12 or 13, I had one that I still remember(I'm 28 now). It starts out in the woods with a large group of other people. It is kind of a post-apocalyptic setting - lots of ruins and things in the forest - and, without anyone saying anything, I knew that, as a group, we were doing some sort of "rite of passage" sort of thing(I played a lot of Gamma World at that age). So we're hiking through the woods, and in the distance we see what looks like black needles stretching from the ground way up into the sky. As we get closer, we realize these are buildings; towers. They were rather wide at the base, but they went up as far as you could see(and probably farther). At the top... well, as close to the top as we could see... there was a bridge connecting the two towers.
As we got close, a fat man in a tuxedo steps out from the near tower steps out and says "good you're here" and leads us into a door on the side of the tower. We enter into a large, dark room. At the far end of the room were three doors... well, actually, two doors and a hole in the ground. One door was large, and made of marble and coral and lined with gold - the sort of thing you might see on a palace. The other was your typical white wooden door that might been seen on a house in suburban america with a white picket fence around it. The hole in the ground looked like it had been hastily dug - it was surrounded by dirt and filth and sh*t. The fat man says something to the effect that we need to choose a door, and that there will be other choices to make, and if we do well, we'll come out the other side, and pass. Most people lined up at the golden door, and a large group lined up at the wooden door. Not caring whether or not I got dirty, and not wanting to wait for the large crowds, I went went through the filthy hole. I was the first of maybe a half a dozen to do so.
Now, this is where the dream gets surreal. Particularly since I only remember small bits and pieces of it. From the hole, I emerged into the car of a subway system, which already had a few other people on it. The subway stops and we get off into this town(we're still in the tower, I think... told you it was surreal). This town was dusty, it was dirty, there were old newspapers blowing down the street. I walked around for a while when I found the Fonz(y'all remember Happy Days, right), who was sitting in an alley, dejected and not wanting to go any farther. You see, at that age, Fonzy was sort of a character I looked up to - self-confident, in charge, good with girls - all the things I wasn't. So it was kind of unnerving to see him in this situation. So I take some time to convince him to go with me, but he doesn't want to, and eventually I move on. The next thing I remember is reaching the top of the tower where the bridge was. But this was no ordinary bridge. It was made of wooden planks and had a wooden roof that was held up by wooden posts attached to the floor. Looking out from the bridge you saw the sort of star-field special effect like you'd see in a bad science fiction movie - lights of many different colors shooting all around. And the bridge moved - it swayed back and forth and rippled - like in the footage of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse, except that this bridge stayed up. As I attempted to cross it, I got thrown into one of the wooden posts. As I attempted it again, I got thrown into one of the posts on the other side, I little bit further across. It doesn't take too long to figure out that this is how you're meant to cross - you use the swaying motion to throw you from post to post and zigzag your way across the bridge. About a third of the way across, I found a friend of mine who was holding on to his post for dear life and wouldn't let go. He begged me to take him back, but the way the bridge swayed, they only easy way to cross was to go forward... besides, the objective of our "test" was to go forward, not back. So I tried to explain to him that I'd figured out how to cross it and even demostrated on the next zig and zag... but he wouldn't listen to me. So after I'd shown him how to cross, I decided he'd have to do it for himself - I couldn't do it for him(besides, having demonstrated a couple of legs, I couldn't get back to him anyway), and I decided to go on.
The next thing I remember is near the base of the second tower. This is the part that still scares me to this day... anyway, I enter this huge room. It contains one of those carnival rides they have at Disneyland where you sit inside a tiny plastic airplane mounted on a hydraulic arm, which is in turn attached to a carousel. When the ride starts, you start spinning around and around in a circle, and, if you don't do anything else, the hydraulic arm lifts you up and down. However, there's a little lever inside the airplane that overrides the hydraulic arm and you can control when you go up and when you go down. This particular ride in my dream was set up like the Disneyland ride, expect that it also had a button inside. I experimented with the button and found that when I pushed it, the machine gun mounted on the front of the airplane fired(wonder if Disneyland will ever have a ride like that?). I'm wasn't that interested in the machine gun, and began to play with the control lever, and figured out how to best control the plane(diving and swooping and all kinds of things that you would think a carnival ride like that couldn't do). Eventually I became aware that there was another plane on the ride, with someone else in it and - oh no! - they were shooting at me. So I maneuvered around a bit and discovered that this other person hadn't spent his time learning to control his plane, so I got in behind him pretty easily and fired. Then the ride stopped, the planes landed and I got out to see who the other person was. I walk over to the other plane and there, inside, dead was my best friend from those days. When I say best friend, I mean someone that I was so close to that the only reason we weren't brothers is that we had different parents. Anyways, needless to say I was quite upset at having killed my best friend in the world, when the fat man in the tuxedo chooses to reappear and says "congratulations, you made it". Then the dream ended.
To this day, I still live in fear of the day when I have to shoot down my friends in order to get ahead... I'm going to do my best to see to it that that doesn't happen... |
