... if you are supposed to supply the solution then you should also know when. The only reason the you wouldn't know is because you don't know how to supply that solution, or so it would appear. You now have a credibility breach. In this case, "I don't know" is not an acceptable response. "We'll figure it out and get back to you tomorrow", is a barely tolerable response, depending on how long you've had to prepare. It now looks like you won't be capable of supplying their solution and the next reasonable step, for them, is to get it elsewhere. Before handeling this in any sort of adversarial manner, prepare your resume. You will probably lose. Given the sparse facts you have outlined here.
