"My right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins." While not 100% accurate, the analogy is a good one. These people are allowed their OPINION. If anyone ever tries to put such beliefs into practice, I'll be one of the first to make him incapable of ever trying it again.
As for Mike, the best way is to ask him. Mike is a nice guy, but he will offend without meaning to. My bet is it was a misunderstanding, which is best solved by asking.
