some of the Redhat books (something like Redhat x.x Unleased - not the manuals) which discuss different installations and i'm fairly certain that the packages and the names are pretty standard from one distribution to the next - what differs is how its all arranged and delivered to you - i'm pretty sure that someplace there is a general description of the different packages which can be installed on the internet - some *have* to be installed - others are needed only in contingency situations (ie. you need X Windows installed in order to install KDE) and some are purely extra (like a lot of the games)
