I was a Caldera VAR (Value Added Reseller) for years.
- RH and Caldera have serious differences in the boot init process (Caldera's a serious improvement).
- There are also library compatibility issues, with RH seriously screwing the pooch on libgc migrations. Simply look at the RH v6.0, v6.1, v7.x fiascos, for proof.
- Unless you have a properly set up VMware host, you can't even do what you're talking about.
BTW, Caldera OpenLinux server is great, but since Caldera bought SCO their prices have sky-rocketed out of sight. The OpenDesktop product is mucho excellente (is that a Californianism or what);
- Although it may lag RH in some features. But at least, they aren't always screwing with the configs.
- The way they do the /etc/rc.d stuff may seem a bit strange at first, but it's more manageble if you are running a server farm (like I am).
- I've recently rebuilt every server to run SUsE and I'm reasonably happy (but I miss the Caldera /etc/sysconfig and SUsE is rather sloppy in /etc/rc.d).
Whatever you do, look into Webmin, if you are running more than one server.
