i did hear on some authority last spring from a Compaq Engineer at a conference I attended that they had signed a deal with the US Government in relation to Open VMS - and part of the deal was that it had to remain around for 20 years - although that could mean "supported" but not "improved" after the most recent incarnation (7.3) - also not sure what that means after the recent deal with HP. just my 2¢ of course :)
