In the light of the tragedy, by mekkanik_mike2001-09-13 01:54:51

I now understand your anger by drugless 2001-09-13 11:36:35
It is difficult for people thousands of miles away to truly comprehend any tragedy, much less this totally senseless act. Like pretty well everybody on this board, I too have lost loved ones so I can empathize with your feelings of loss. However, I can only sympathize with your feelings of rage which you must feel everytime you look out at the empty space in the Manhattan skyline. In most tragedies, the visual scars are quickly removed -- cars can be towed away, ships will sink, but in this situation, the scars will be forever imprinted on the people's minds of the loss suffered there. I had never been to the World Trade Center, or the Plaza, but have seen pictures there. My hope is that eventually there will be another scene of beauty there. I can think of nothing more fitting than a peace park in the empty space, a memorial to all those who perished.

With these thoughts in mind, I can now understand some of the remarks made in yesterday's post. I hope you have had the opportunity to read a late addition that I made to one of your posts. And yes, I do pity you, but please do not mistake the word pity for its common use of scorn. I mean pity in its truest sense -- I do not know how I would react if I were in your place, and pray to God that I never have to find out.

And yes, I also still consider you a friend, even though some of the words you wrote did sting, although not on a personal level but on a humanistic level. I can understand pride in one's country, after all I am extremely proud of being a Canadian and travel with a Canadian flag proudly displayed. However, for this pride to be elevated to the level to which other nationalities are diminished is something which I can not comprehend. This is merely what I was commenting on yesterday. I think that Canada is a great country, otherwise I would not be living here. However, I am not blind to the problems that Canada has, nor am I blind to the problems that the United States (or any other country) has. Countries are run by human beings; human beings are not perfect; ergo countries are not perfect.

I can only hope that the anger that you and many other people are feeling does not prevent the United States from acting in a calm and rational manner. The people who did this atrocity understand irrational acts -- they have problems with rational acts. What would hurt someone like Bin Laden the most is for someone who has suffered loss at his hands to go up to him, look him in the eyes and say "I forgive you." Hatred can not be fought with hatred. This has been tried before and it doesn't work. A co-worker of mine put it very succinctly, "This is just going to justify more racism". I truly hope that it isn't true as one of the best things about Canada and the United States has been the openness with which we welcome people from other nations into our own.

My prayers go out to you and yours

Sincerely,
Douglas Lancaster
