I don't know about gpf-comics, but Dilbert for one *can't* make references to stuff like this. It's a syndicated strip, and has to go through the publishers at United Media. All cartoons are written weeks in advance. Those of us who've been reading dilbert.com for more than a year or so probably remember how it used to be 7 days behind the print version.
UF, on the other hand, is a mostly independent operation. If a situation crops up that needs commenting on, Illiad can replace the strip planned for tomorrow with a new one. And this isn't the first time he's done that, either.
This is why you don't see a whole lot of social commentary on the comics page - they can't keep up with the news. |
