I can understand why he did it, but why rip it? by Glasnaus2001-09-13 08:27:22

I think Mike said it best in the strip itself. "A missile silo just isn't cool anymore." That really sums it up rather well.

While Illiad was by no means promoting or condoning terrorist activities, nor even eluding to them, the thought of so many people dying gives an eerie sense of regret when you have anything that has or could do that.

Living in a missile silo is cool when you think about the nuclear waste and the ancient technology from the Cold War and what-not. But living in a missile silo while constantly thinking how many people it could have destroyed is just not cool anymore.

The idea has not changed, the focus has not changed, but the mindset has changed. We're forced to look at things a bit differently in light of recent events, and the missile silo simply doesn't carry the same level of humor it did two days ago.

I woke up this morning and wondered what Illiad would do, and I could think of two possibilities, the first of which is what he's done, exit the sequence tactfully, with a somber tone, respecting those who died, and respected the power we've witnessed. Thus, while Greg jokes about not knowing what the sun is anymore, Mike takes a moment to appreciate the fact that the world remains.

The other, less tactful method Illiad could have used today is to have Pitr lead a strike force in retaliation. This could have been funny, but only if pulled off very carefully. I imagined something along the lines of spinning a wheel with Pitr saying "Wheel of mortality, turn, turn, turn. Tell us the target that we should burn." Then we see the wheel stop with all but one space being occupied by Osama bin Laden's face, and the remaining space containing Bill Gates.

I believe that would have been very funny, and let to a whole new UF adventure that would in fact mirror the sediments of the vast majority of Americans (86% around here according to a local TV poll). However, it could have also put Illiad in a tight spot if it didn't go over well, or if the situation changed quite suddenly again.

While I understand Illiad could have done things differently, I respect and appreciate his decision, and stand by him all the way. This strip is not a sign of Illiad being afraid of the issue, but a respect for those involved.
