I think when these terrible disasters strike some people need to believe that if they were in that situation things would have turned out differently. When he says he blames the passengers hear instead "This stuff scares the hell out of me. I need to believe that I would survive this myself in order to get through the day." Don't let one thoughtless comment ruin an otherwise good friendship. btw. I read on cnn's website that the terrorists on the plane that went down in Penn had a box they claimed to be a bomb. I now understand why they wouldn't overpower some guys wielding knives. It was only after they realized they would die anyway by not doing something that they attacked.
